NT: Motorist charged after hitting girl lying on road

DARWIN, Dec 26 AAP - A man has been charged over the death of a teenage girl who was
struck by his car as she lay on a Northern Territory road.

The 30-year-old Holden Commodore driver hit the 16-year-old as she lay on Robinson
Road at Borroloola at about 12.30am (CST) today, a police spokeswoman said.

She said the driver with the assistance of two female passengers put the girl in the
car and drove her to the Borroloola Police Station.

Police and clinic staff attempted to resuscitate the girl for about 45 minutes but
were unable to save her.

The driver has been charged with driving a motor vehicle causing harm or death, drink
driving, driving unregistered, driving unlicensed and driving uninsured.

He has been bailed to appear in Darwin Magistrates Court on 26 February 2008.

The girl is the first person to die on Northern Territory Roads over the Christmas
road toll period.
